Role Overview
PUMA has an open position for a Software Engineer I (Backend) within the Consumer Intelligence & Engagement division in India. In this role, you will design, implement, and maintain high-throughput, low-latency backend microservices that power digital personalization, recommendation engines, and contextual search journeys across consumer touchpoints. Collaborating closely with Lead Engineers, Data Engineers, and AI/ML specialists, you will build resilient, event-driven distributed architectures that deploy real-time artificial intelligence and search capabilities to enhance product discovery and consumer engagement.
Core Responsibilities
- Backend Microservices & APIs: Design, build, and optimize high-performance REST APIs and microservices using Java and Spring Boot for personalized product discovery and digital journeys.
- AI/ML & GenAI Integration: Partner with data science and machine learning teams to integrate generative AI models, recommendation logic, and predictive algorithms into customer-facing applications.
- Search Platform Engineering: Develop and fine-tune search index infrastructure using Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or vector search engines to enable low-latency retrieval.
- Event-Driven Pipelines: Implement reliable event streaming architectures using Apache Kafka to support real-time data flow and event-based consumer interactions.
- Data Storage & Caching: Manage data models across relational (SQL) and NoSQL datastores, integrating Redis caching layers to ensure low query latency and system scalability.
- Frontend & Observability Support: Build modular UI components with React where required, while integrating system telemetry, monitoring, and tracing to maintain system health.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Professional Experience: 2+ years of hands-on software development experience building scalable web applications and distributed backend microservices.
- Programming Proficiency: Strong programming command of Java and enterprise framework development with Spring Boot.
- API & Architecture: Proven track record of developing RESTful web services, distributed systems, and decoupled service layers.
- Messaging & Caching: Practical hands-on experience utilizing Apache Kafka for event-driven messaging alongside Redis for distributed caching.
- Databases & Search: Direct experience managing relational (SQL) and non-relational (NoSQL) databases, paired with exposure to search indexing engines like Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.
- Bonus Stacks: Exposure to modern frontend development with React, vector search databases, or AI-assisted development tools.
