Role Summary
MSD (Merck & Co., Inc.) is seeking an experienced Specialist, SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) and Automation Engineer to join our IT Technology Center in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. In this hybrid role, you will be responsible for designing, deploying, administering, and automating enterprise Microsoft SQL Server database environments across on-premise and cloud infrastructures. Leveraging the Ansible Automation Platform, PowerShell scripting, and YAML, you will build automated frameworks for database provisioning, security patching, and gold image deployment, partnering with software engineering and systems administration teams to deliver resilient, high-performing database services supporting global biopharma operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Database Automation Engineering: Design, build, and maintain automation workflows for provisioning, patching, maintenance, and gold image releases across multiple SQL Server versions using Ansible Automation Platform, YAML, and PowerShell.
- Database Administration & High Availability: Manage, configure, and monitor Microsoft SQL Server database instances, implementing and supporting Always On Availability Groups (AAG) for mission-critical reliability.
- Backup & Disaster Recovery: Oversee enterprise database backup and recovery operations utilizing enterprise data protection solutions such as Commvault or Cohesity.
- Infrastructure Optimization: Collaborate with system administrators and software engineers to optimize database query performance, refine server configurations, and ensure seamless system software maintenance.
- Security & Compliance: Implement industry-standard IT security controls, compliance mandates, and access governance policies across Windows Server and Active Directory environments.
- Product & Delivery Lifecycle: Participate actively in product planning, sprint execution, and technology roadmap deliveries, maintaining comprehensive technical documentation and reusable code in GitHub.
Key Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technology field.
- Experience: 3 to 6 years of hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL Server Database Administration and infrastructure automation.
- Core Technical Skills: Deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server database management and administration tools, Ansible Automation Platform (including complex Ansible roles), YAML, and advanced PowerShell scripting.
- Systems & High Availability: Strong working knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory integration, GitHub version control, and SQL Server Always On Availability Groups (AAG).
- Infrastructure & Platforms: Familiarity with cloud and virtualization architectures (Microsoft Azure or AWS) and enterprise backup technologies (Commvault or Cohesity).
- Problem-Solving & Mindset: Proven ability to perform independent troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and end-to-end technical ownership with a product- and customer-centric approach.
