Role Summary
Microsoft is hiring a Software Engineer II for its Azure SQL Performance Engineering team in Bengaluru. In this role, you will work at the forefront of large-scale cloud database systems. You will design and execute competitive benchmarks, conduct deep performance investigations, analyze bottlenecks across compute/storage/distributed layers, collaborate with OEM partners on hardware tech, and drive optimizations that enhance performance, scale, and reliability for Azure SQL Database.
Key Responsibilities
- Performance Engineering & Analysis: Design, run, and analyze performance workloads, benchmarks, and POCs to measure and root-cause database bottlenecks across compute and storage layers.
- Hardware & SKU Modeling: Evaluate modern hardware technologies with OEM partners, analyze emerging Azure SKUs, and produce technical marketing deliverables (benchpapers, demos, white papers).
- Product Optimization: Partner with core engineering teams to diagnose performance issues, influence cloud platform architecture, and implement code/config fixes in C++.
- Cloud Operations & Supportability: Strengthen cloud hardware and software deployment efficiency to meet perf/scale SLAs; participate in team on-call rotation schedules.
Key Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or IT technical discipline.
- Experience: 4+ years of hands-on programming experience in C++ alongside 4+ years in Performance Engineering (workload creation, profiling, bottleneck analysis).
- Mandatory Technical Stack: Strong proficiency in C++, performance testing/analysis tools, root-cause debugging, and system troubleshooting.
- Preferred Technical Exposure: Deep knowledge in Database or OS internals, hardware architecture (CPU/Networking/Storage), Windows/Linux performance tools, and cloud infrastructure.
