Role Summary
eBay is hiring a SWE-3 Machine Learning Engineer for its Ads Engineering organization in Bengaluru. Operating under a hybrid work model, this role sits at the intersection of applied machine learning and scalable software engineering. You will build and operate low-latency backend services, big data pipelines, and MLOps platforms that power eBay's sponsored search, item recommendations, ranking, retrieval, personalization, and Generative AI capabilities for millions of buyers and sellers worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- MLOps & Pipeline Engineering: Design, build, and maintain MLOps pipelines for continuous training, validation, CI/CD deployment, and real-time monitoring of production AI models.
- Low-Latency Model Serving: Implement and optimize traditional ML and Generative AI models (including LLMs) for high-throughput, low-latency API serving using C++ / Java / Python / gRPC.
- Big Data Feature Pipelines: Engineer robust data pipelines using Apache Spark, Hadoop, or Flink to process massive e-commerce datasets for model training and feature engineering.
- Research Translation & Collaboration: Partner closely with Applied Researchers to translate novel algorithmic prototypes into hardened, production-ready microservices.
Key Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience: 4+ years of relevant work experience in Machine Learning, AI, Big Data, or Software Engineering.
- Mandatory Technical Stack: Object-oriented programming (Python, Java, or Scala), production ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow), big data processing (Apache Spark/Hadoop), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), MLOps, and REST/gRPC API design.
- Preferred Technical Exposure: Deployment of Generative AI / LLMs in production, stream processing with Apache Flink, public cloud substrates (AWS/GCP/Azure), and CI/CD pipelines.
- Core Soft Skills: Strong system design capabilities, collaborative cross-functional execution, and production problem-solving skills.
