Role Overview
CGI is seeking an experienced Senior Database Engineer specializing in MySQL and PostgreSQL, with opportunities in Bangalore and Chennai (Hybrid: 3 days per week on-site at client office). In this critical data infrastructure and operations role, you will be responsible for end-to-end database design, development, administration, performance optimization, and 24/7 high-availability production support across high-volume MySQL and PostgreSQL database environments.
Core Responsibilities
- Database Engineering & Development: Architect schemas, tables, indexes, views, triggers, and complex stored procedures/PL-pgSQL routines aligned with application specifications and relational data modeling best practices.
- Performance Tuning & Optimization: Execute execution plan analysis (EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE), optimize slow queries, rebuild indexes, tune configuration parameters, and resolve database bottlenecks in collaboration with application teams.
- Database Administration & Security: Install, patch, configure, and upgrade MySQL and PostgreSQL engines; manage user access control, roles, encryption, and overall database security postures.
- High Availability & Disaster Recovery: Configure, monitor, and maintain replication topologies, failover mechanisms, automated backup routines, restore validations, and disaster recovery drills.
- L2/L3 Production Operations: Provide tier-2/3 technical support for database incidents, perform root cause analysis (RCA), participate in change release management, and support production release deployments.
- Database Upgrades & Migrations: Plan and execute major version upgrades, environment migrations, and data transformations while ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
- Professional Experience: 6+ years of dedicated hands-on experience in database development, administration, and production support.
- Core Database Expertise: Deep production proficiency in both MySQL (5.x/8.x) and PostgreSQL architectures, including internal engine configurations and security frameworks.
- Query Optimization: Strong track record of analyzing execution plans, optimizing complex joins and queries, and tuning database memory and cache parameters.
- Reliability & Recovery: Hands-on experience with database backup/restore strategies, replication setups, and disaster recovery drills.
- Preferred Capabilities: Working familiarity with cloud-managed database services (AWS RDS/Aurora, Azure SQL/PostgreSQL), scripting with Python or Shell, containerized environments (Docker/Kubernetes), and infrastructure automation tools like Terraform.
