Role Overview
American Express features an opportunity for a Software Engineer II within the Technology organization in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India (Hybrid). In this engineering role, you will design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise-grade software applications and multi-tiered distributed systems. The position centers on implementing performant backend solutions using Java 11+, building modern web user interfaces using React and Next.js, containerizing services on Red Hat OpenShift and Docker, and executing automated testing, continuous integration, and observability practices across test and production environments.
Core Responsibilities
- Application Development: Architect, implement, test, and debug software applications across backend services and modern web tiers using Java 11+, React, and Next.js.
- Distributed Systems Design: Build and optimize multi-tiered distributed architectures, applying complex data structures, algorithms, and modular object-oriented designs.
- Containerization & Cloud Deployment: Package and deploy containerized services into cloud platforms utilizing Docker and Red Hat OpenShift.
- Database Operations: Design and interact with relational database schemas and NoSQL persistence layers to support transaction processing.
- Testing & CI/CD: Write automated unit and integration tests, conduct code reviews, and maintain continuous delivery pipelines (CI/CD) to enforce software quality.
- Monitoring & Telemetry: Instrument, track, and stabilize applications across integration and production environments using monitoring suites such as Splunk, Dynatrace, and ELK Stack.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Align with product managers and business stakeholders to translate technical requirements into scalable, compliance-ready features.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Backend Experience: 4+ years of hands-on software development experience with Java (minimum Java 11) and multi-tiered system design.
- Web Technologies: 2+ years of frontend development experience utilizing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, and Next.js.
- Database & Data Layer: Working knowledge of both relational databases and NoSQL database stores.
- Cloud & Infrastructure: Proven experience packaging and deploying applications on Docker containers and Red Hat OpenShift.
- Observability & Automation: Hands-on experience with performance monitoring tools (Splunk, Dynatrace, or ELK Stack) along with CI/CD and test automation frameworks.
- Preferred Stacks: Familiarity with Python, Machine Learning model experimentation, or AI proof-of-concept workflows.
